Making ‘nice’ a Strategic Advantage - transforming HR through culture change

IHG is a nice company to work for, we are a hospitality company and we are here to serve our guests. Our culture of being ‘nice’ and serving is both a strength and a weakness when it comes to HR. We have an enviable record of growth and shareholder return, but over recent years our competitors have started to grow faster than us, and we realise we have to change.

The HR function lay right at the heart of this change - tirelessly transforming everyone else and enabling a shift in our culture through ruthlessly simplifying our leadership behaviours and our core processes such as performance management and dialling up D&I to enable us to move fast, talk straight, think return and build one team.

Now it’s HR’s turn to transform. We have all the tech, the fashionable operating model, but it’s just not working. The urge to serve and ‘be nice’ is so strong and this has led us to create variation and complexity and a confusing employee experience. Over a third of our HR time is spent on what we call ‘trapped capacity’ tasks - work we just shouldn’t be doing. We can simplify our stakeholder experience, our processes and our HR products, but none of this matters if we can’t change the way our HR team behave. We need to change our why, our what and our how, and most importantly build the skills we need for the future. We are doing this from the bottom up, across the horizontal and the top down, as change is not linear. We need to change from parents, carers and bespoke strategists to a new tribe, a tribe where we make nice our competitive advantage. This is our HR Enablers journey.
